BARRISTER OBINNA MBATA

 

 

Obinna Nonyerem Mbata is a lawyer, an ex-banker, an administrator and a gentleman with vast skills in negotiation, banking, training, effective leadership and creativity.

He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2001 after graduating from the Nigerian Law School, Abuja where he obtained a Barrister at Law (B.L) qualification. He had earlier obtained his Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B) from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where served variously as a Judge of the Students Union High Court, as well as President, National Association of Imo State Students.

Obinna Mbata (Esq.) is presently serving as the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Finance, Imo State. Prior to this appointment, he had served as the Chairman of the ad-hoc Committee on Imo Housing and as the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Resources and Pension Affairs, Imo State.

He also served in various capacities during his work career in banking with Diamond Bank Plc between 2004 and 2014 where he left his position as the Regional Head, Legal Services (North) to serve his state. Between 2002 and 2004, he served as a legal practitioner in litigation in the law firm of Ajunwa & Co., a private Law firm.

He has obtained different certifications and enjoys membership of different professional bodies. Some of these bodies include; Nigerian Bar Association (Unity Bar), International Bar Association, and Institute of Strategic Management, Nigeria, where he is a full member. He is presently undergoing a programme with the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators, Nigeria (ICSAN).

He has equally undergone several courses and trainings in; Effective Leadership, Train the Trainers programme, Spervisory Skills Development, Creative Thinking and Innovation, Communication and Business Writing, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Democratic Leadership, Credit Management, to mention a few.

Obinna Mbata has in the course of his work experience, undertaken such critical responsibilities as Development of Template for Target Driven achievement in the Board of Internal Revenue, Imo State, Automation of Stamp Duties collection for the Board of Internal revenue, Automation of Payment of Salaries in the State Public Service, and development and completion of some critical infrastructures within budget. He is presently a member of the Committee on the Reform of Pensions in Imo State, Committee on the Reform of the Public Service, as well as several other public sector reform initiatives. He has appeared at Public Hearings on Electronic Fraud Prohibition and Electronic Transfer of Funds Crime Bill 2013 before the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human rights and Legal Matters as well as Public Hearing on a Bill to repeal the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation Act 2006 and Re-enact the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation act, 2014 and For Other Matters Connected Therewith before the House of Representatives Committee on Banking and Currency, on behalf of the MD/CEO of Diamond Bank Plc.

He has also participated in and led several dispute resolution for a at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation NDIC), Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) among others.

Obinna loves his community and continuosly seeks avenues to better the lot of the less privileged and the helpless. He enjoys such hobbies as reading, writing, travelling, cycling as well as active engagement in social engagements and community service.

Barr. Obinna Mbata hails from Amawom in Owerri Municipal, Imo State and is married with children.
